Pollution and Coffee capsules: What is the problem?

Coffee capsules are not considered as packaging, so they are not intended for separate waste collection, but they are thrown into unsorted rubbish.

The definition of biodegradable is closely linked to the conditions and time used to complete the biodegradation process.
Without these specifications, the biodegradable term becomes vague, because virtually any organic substance is biodegradable unless the time arc is specified.

The treatment takes place by means of a biological process in the presence of oxygen. Mater-Bi ® family of plastic materials developed, patented and produced by Novamont, containing renewable resources of agricultural origin.
They are biodegradable and compostable according to the European standard Uni EN 13432 and guarantee resistance and tightness in a similar way to traditional plastics.
Compostable Plastics Not all biodegradable plastics are also compostable.
In order to be admitted to composting, bioplastics must meet the following criteria, established by the European norms UNI EN13432 and EN14995:
• No toxic substances, such as heavy metals;
• Biodegradability within 24 weeks in industrial composting conditions;
• Disintegration, i.e. fragmentation and loss of visibility in the final compost: within 3 months, the mass of the material must be at least 90% from fragments smaller than 2 mm;
• No negative and toxic effects on the final compost.
As we can see, some companies care about the environmental issue and are moving to make the coffee capsules more sustainable.
This is the right direction: As long as the capsule market continues to grow, making the difference will be the companies that offer more and more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives.
